On the south end of the Calcutta maidan stands Victoria Memorial, the most solid reminder of British Calcutta, built of white marble. This huge museum, a combinationof classical European architecture with Moghul influences, is an attraction not to be missed and has some superb pieces. Timings Tue-Sun I0am-3:30pm, Mon Closed. Or Martyr Memorial, when translated, isa 48 metre high monument situated onthe maidan and is a centre for all political activities.
Situated on the corner of Sudder St and Chowringhee Rd, the Indian Museum was built in 1875. It is the largest museum in the country and is divided into 6 sections: art, archaeology, anthropology, geology, zoology and industry. The highlight is the display of relics from the Indus Valley Civilization.

NEHRU CHILDREN'S MUSEUM
Located at the crossing of Chowringhee and AJC Bose Rd, it houses dolls and puppets depicting the Hindu epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.
Timings Wed-Sun l2noon-8pm, Mon Tue 3pm 8pm.
This museum houses a rich collection of folk arts and crafts of Bengal and is located at Bratcharigran, Joka.
Timings Fri-Tue 11:30am-4pm, Wed 11:30am-1pm, Thu Closed.
THE MARBLE PALACE
Situated in north Calcutta, the Marble Palace has a collection of statues and original paintings including works of Rubens and Sir Joshua Reynolds.
Obtain permission from Deputy Director of Tourism, 3/2 BBD Bagh, Ph : 2488271/2, before your visit.

Nearby is Tagore House, a centre for Indiandance, drama, music and other arts. This is the ancestral house of Rabindranath Tagore, India's greatest modern poet.
